Waterfall Mill 005

b22929. End view of Waterfall spinning mill. The mill was built by John Fish in 1851-52. The original building had about 40,000 mule spindles and 600 looms. By the 1890’s there were 73,288 spindles. The weaving shed was rebuilt in 1949-50, and automatic looms installed. The mill now has various uses. The photograph, taken 8 May 1980, shows the spinning mill with the weaving shed on the right. Queen Victoria Street and the railway can be seen on the left. M. 31 Wat.
