Swallow Street Mill 003

b22948. Swallow Street Mill was built as a weaving shed in 1850 by Henry Ward. It was known as the “Lather Box” which was a reference to Ward’s early occupation as a barber. It had 27,000 spindles in 1854. By 1884 the mill had 65,372 spindles and 938 looms. The mill closed and was knocked down in mid 1970’s. The photograph was taken in 1970 and shows the mill yard.
