Taken on 24th August 1867, this image is of civil engineering construction in the Roddlesworth valley for the Blackburn-Chorley line, on the Cherry tree-Chorley stretch. The contractor was William Harrison and the image shows the manual nature of the work involved, although explosives could have been used initially.
