Highfield Mill 003

Highfield Mill. Weaving shed on site of older saw mill, built 1848-49 by Joseph Harrison and William Marsden. Enlarged mid 1850's. Harrison and Co, added a spinning mill for 30,000 spindles 1859-60. The mill employed 250-270 persons and manufactured course to medium mule-yarns, printers and shirtings. Harrison Sons and Co ran the factory till 1905 when it was sold to Willaim Walker., of Phoenix and Cardwell Mill.. Derbyshire and Blackburn of Adlington took over 1927-28, scrapping spinning, weaving ended 1932. The shed was reopened after world war two. Closed 1959 under Cotton Industry Act. Demolition took place in 1973. rnMike Rothwell.
