Greenlow Mill 002

Greenlow Mill. Weaving shed erected in 1839-40 by F.A Forrest. The mill was known locally as "the Lobby" owing to its long entrance passage. it had 344 looms and employed about 200. in 1849 the mill was sold to Michael Swithibank of Cleaver Street mill. From 1852-66 Benjamin Walmsley and partners of Accrington leased the shed. Operations wer disrupted until 1871 when Whalley and Walley, of Throstle Nest took over. Soon after becoming sole proprieter in 1878 Thomas Walley was delcared bankrupt. Property acquired by James Almond, a partner of J Briggs and Co. Alexandra Mill. Shed extended to 495 looms in 1881, a new horizontal tandem engine was possibly instaled after this date. Three storey block ware installed in 1898, The mill wove sateens, cambrics, muslins and mulls. W.H Almond Ltd formed 1913, suceeded by Greenlow Mill Co Ltd 1927.
