Gorse Bridge Mill, Greenbank.rnA weaving shed established 1860 by William Cooper and John Corbridge. Only 66 looms were installed prior to the Cotton Famine. Following James Leaver's brief tenancy the mill was sold to John Dean, looms increased to 360. Aaron Bury took over c1873. Bury's original trade as a hosier and draper gave rise to the name "Stocking Needle". Enlarged 1880-82 to 600 looms. Bury was bakrupt for a second time in 1883 and the mill was purchased by Micah Birtwistle. Leased to W.H. Almond. In 1922 the Gorse Bridge Mill Co. Ltd was formed. Weaving ended in 1936-37 and the shed was occupied by Reconditioned Looms Ltd., textile machinery engineers. Now demolished.rnMike Rothwell.
