Garden Street Mill 010
Garden Street Mill. Built by John Carr of Cleaver Street. Prior to entering manufacture Carr had worked at a number of local mills. The original shed contained 508 looms. Carr retired in 1874 leasing the property to Smith, Bowdler and Co. John Sharples and Co, weaver of shirtings, cambrics. etc 1880-92. After a short tenancy by the Cobden St.Mg Co. Ltd, the Garden Street Mill Co. Ltd was formed to take over the mill. Additons were added over time. Weaving ended 1933-34 although the principals of the company continued to operate Witton Mill. The factory was later used to make gas masks. then Footwear (Newmans) Mill now demolished. rnMike Rothwell
