b22603. A burst fly wheel of a steam engine at the Bennington Street Destructor. It had once been the tallest brick built chimney in the country at 312ft. M. 28rnrnThe Destructor was demolished on Sunday, rn15th November 1959. Reports in the Evening Telegraph, Monday 16th November, 1959 on the front page noted: GOING...GONE.. whilst page 5 noted 'Tough Old Giant Falls At Last: With an ear splitting roar and a blinding flsh of flame, Blackburn's giant chimney at the old destructor in Bennington-street crashed to the ground soon after seven o'clock last night'.
