Coal Picking 001
People at Rishton Colliery outcrop desperately digging for usable coal in order to cook and keep warm during a miners' strike, which caused a coal famine. People travelled from as far away as Blackburn to dig for coal in sometimes deep trenches as the image shows. Coal miners struck in a desperate attempt to defend their living standards as colliery owners sought to make drastic wage cuts.rnThis image appeared in The Blackburn Times 30th April 1921.
