Samlesbury accident 1973 001

Reported in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph May 15th 1973rnA 30 ton lorry carrying biscuits toppled over at the Samlesbury roundabout – M6 Junction – landing on top of a car. The car, a Vauxhall Viva, was crushed to a thickness of 24” by the weight of the lorry. Rescue services quickly at the scene where amazed to find that a passenger in the car, 60 year old, Mrs. Mary Haggar, had survived the accident and she was carefully removed from the wreckage and taken to hospital.rnSadly, two people lost their lives in the freak accident, Joel, Mrs Haggar’s husband and an aunt, Miss Mary Williamson. The Haggar’s, from Salisbury, Rhodesia where holidaying in the U.K.rnIt is not known where or if these Talbot images were published. The Lancashire Evening Telegraph used images taken by their own photographer, Mr. Vincent Gormley.rnThe Talbots maintained a close relationship with the emergency services and it is likely that they received a tip off about the accident rather than happened upon it.rn
