Winders 001
Early 20th Century image of female winders with their male winding master, in the winding room at Belgrave Spinning Mill, Darwen. The winding room was where the cotton thread was wound on to spindles (bobbins) to be inserted in the shuttle to provide the weft during the weaving process. The site of Belgrave Mill later became that of Crown Paints, itself subsquently demolished to become mostly a site of housing.
