Victoria Street 042

Early twentieth century image of Victoria Street. The boys on the bogie (trolley) have clearly been asked to pose for the camera. On the right can be seen the much loved Maypole shop, which sold groceries and provisions. To the left of Maypole is Althams general store. This business evolved into the well-known travel agent. Left of Althams is Browns butchers. Further along the street can be seen the imposing Crown Hotel, recently re-built following a disasterous gas explosion. Across the street the market stalls are being assembled or perhaps waiting to be dismantled.
