The Hotel King Street 002
b05648. The Hotel in King Street. Following its erection in 1804, the Hotel was for many years one of the town's chief coaching inns. Its architecture is dignified and well-proportioned and typical of a fine Georgian house. During the celebrations after the defeat of Napoleon Buonaparte at Waterloo in 1815 its facade was illuminated by a series of transparencies showing him in the act of climbing a ladder with rugs labelled "Spain Prussia! etc., and John Bull in the act of Tumbling him down. Since closing as a Hotel the building has been put to many uses including the towns Labour Exchange. At the present time it is The Court House Restaurant which was set up by the East Lancashire Deaf Society. Date of Photograph is 1952. M. 851.
