Springfield Mills, Stanley Street, Blackburn.rnLarge spinning and weaving factories on bank of canal. Built by the five sons of John Lewis, grocer and occupation which gave rise to the name "Butter Tub". first weaving shed 1851-52 extended 1854, second shed 1859-60 enlarged 1887. Spinning Mill built 1858-59 and 1861-64. Lewis Brothers Ltd, was one of the number of East Lancashire firms to join the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in 1929. the mill was closed soon after. Demolished 1936-40rnOnly part of the wall can now be seen. A number of houses associated with the Lewis family can be seen in Blackburn. Billing house, Preston New Road, Springfield and Beardwood Bank. The Lewis Textile Museum, Blackburn is based on a collection of early machinery made by Thomas B.Lewis.
