Sir Charles Napier 006
The original Sir Charles Napier public house. Demolished in 1967 to enable the construction of Barbara Castle Way, and relocated to the adjacent former YMCA building. Sir Charles Napier was involved in the Peninsular War of 1812 and was Commander in Chief of India in 1848. His local connection was as Commander of the Northern District (of England) in 1839 - 1840. Napier was sympathetic towards the starving poor and critical (in private) of both political parties.
