Preston New Road 107
b03211. This toll bar was located on Preston New Road at the junction of the ring road. The projecting frontage of the building gave the toll collector clear views along the road. Above the door can just be seen the toll board giving the charges. The right to collect tolls on each turnpike road was let by the trustees at auctions so that the risk of generating sufficient income to cover cost was passed to the successful bidder. The photograph was taken on the 1 November 1890 on the last day tolls were levied on this road. N. 141.
