Image of Blackburn Temperance campaigner Mrs Lewis addressing a public meeting in Blackburn market place (Weekly Telegraph 7th November 1907). Mrs Lewis was an active campaigner against the social and domestic consequences of excess alcohol consumption. Due to the number of pubs, beer shops and breweries, Blackburn was known as the 'beeriest town in Britain' in the late nineteenth century. rnFor further reading see the article on Mrs Lewis in Cotton Town's 'Notable Names of Blackburn and Darwen'.
