Grosart, A B Rev 001

Grosart, Alexander Balloch, Minister and Poet.rnSt.George's Presbyterian Church in Preston New Road had many curious connections with both the religious and the educational life of Blackburn. We may trace its origin back to 1810 when a party of seceders from the Chapel Street Independents erected a chapel of their own in Mount Street and became affiliated with the Lancashire Presbytery. By 1865 it has become too small for its congregation, and in the March of that year, its pastor, Dr Skinner, himself author of several published works, laid the foundation stone of St.Georges. He never lived to see its completion and in the following year was succeeded by Dr.Grosart.rnAlexander Grosart was born in Stirling on June 18th 1835. Dr Grosart died in Dublin on March 16th 1899.rn(for more information on Rev A B Grosart, please refer to Blackburn Worthies by George C Miller. rnIn Blackburn Library, Community History Department)
