Grime, Dr 001
Dr Grime (John)rnDoctor of Medicine.rnDr Grime lived in Mount Street, it was an old stone-fronted house, formerly the residence of the Grime family. This notable local clan was prominently associated with the erection of Mount-Street Chapel across the way. Originally designed as a Presbyterian meeting place. When in 1910 a small body of chapel folk broke away from the Independent Chapel in Chapel Street, it was Henry Grime, sizer who became their chief guarantor.rnHe carried out his business in the rear of the Mount Street premises, access to the side house being obtained by passing under an archway, leading to a court behind High Street.rnIt was Henry's son John, admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons in 1825, who first established the family practice, his surgery being in Water Street. Here he quickly acquired a reputation for benevolence, for during the hard times signalised by the loom breaking riots of the following year, he treated hundreds of patients free of charge, and even relieved them with gifts of money and food.rnHe again distinguished himself during the cholera epidemic of 1832 and when he died at the early age of 47, a monument to his memory was erected by public subscription. It stood in the lonely and neglected graveyard adjoining the chapel, within a few yards of the site of the house where he lived a bachelor existence throughout the whole of his life.rn
