Grimshaw Brothers 001

b22587. Grimshaw Brothers works in Appleby Street. Date of photograph, 3 February 1981. M. 209rnThe view is of "Billy Forest" as it was know locally. Until the 1970s, Billy Forrest was an un made road with deep ridges and pot holes very capable of wrecking a suspension. The buildings on the upper left were owned at some point by the "Eden Chemical Co" who seemed to own the right of way along "Billy Forrest". Once a year a rope was strung along across the canal bridge, presumably to maintain ownership of the right of way. An employee would allow a vehicle to proceed on request by releasing the rope. The two saw tooth buildings in the centre of the picture belonged to an engineering company at one time. Appleby Street ran from the left and continued to Stanley Street. Eden Street (according to the O.S. Map1894, Lancashire Sheet 62.16) stopped before the canal bridge (Paradise Bridge).
