Hargreaves John, of Larkhill House, Blackburn.rnEldest son of Henry Hargreaves of Newchurch in Rossendale. He was born on October 12th 1782.rnHe was appointed coroner for Blackburn Hundred in 1810. He held this office for 55 years, suceeded by his son Henry Unsworth Hargreaves.rnClerk to the Police commisioners, clerk to the improvement commissioners and finally in 1831 town clerk.rnThe site of Larkhill House, where he once resided for many years was occupied by shops.rnIt was one of three or four residences of the Regency period, at the junction of the present Regent street and Penny Street. It was of commanding proportions, with bold cornice projections and a long garden defended by iron railings.rnIn his youth Mr Hargreaves was a captain of the Blackburn militia and it is interesting to recall that his two grandsons, Fred and Jack both popular footballers did much to establish the early reputation of the Blackburn Rovers.rn His long life came to a tragic end as a result of an accident at home, resulting in severe burns and he died om December 16th 1873.rn(for more information on John Hargreaves please refer to Blackburn Worthies of Yesterday by Geo C.Miller) held in Blackburn Library, Community History, level 2.
