Garstang, John 002

Professor John Garstang was educated at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. While attending Oxford to study mathematics, Garstang developed an interest in archaeology and carried out excavations at Ribchester. Later, he founded the Institute of Archaeology and became the first professor of archaeology at Oxford. Garstang is regarded as a pioneer in the development of modern methods of archaeology, with a scientific approach to record keeping and the taking of detailed photographs to record every stage of a ‘dig’.
