Taken on Clayton Street in the 1890s, this image shows a horse-drawn, steam-operated fire engine. The shiny brass helmets were worn by the town's volunteer firemen, who won prizes when competing with other volunteer brigades. Blackburn's full-time firemen wore helmets of polished black leather.
