Cardwell Mill 006
Cardwell Mill, Stakes Hall, Livesey.rnCaptain Graham's spinning mill for 18,000 spindles. built 1858-59. James Thompson of Hollin Bank was running the mill. T.Eccles and Sons and Co of Walton Le Dale took over 1875-76. The firm later became Thomas Mitchell Eccles and Co. Weaving shed added 1878, weaving Indian shirtings, Cardwell Mill Co, Ltd formed by William Walker and others. 80 looms added 1905. John Hawkins and sons Ltd a Preston firm owned by William Birtwistle, took over 1928-29. spinning removed, looms reduced, weaving ceased late 1950's and the buildings were later used as a cloth and yarn warehouse and for knitting by William Birtwistle Allied Mills. finally closed in 1983 rn(Mike Rothwell)
