Canton Mill 003
Canton Mill, Higher Audley Street. Only the outer walls remain of this mill when photographed in 2011. The North East walls have recesses for tacklers benches and stone blocks to hold second motion shaft. Opposite wall retains roof line. rnThomas Stones 1865 shed, originally designed to hold 180 looms. sold to John Spencer in 1878, extended to 484 looms. In 1885 John Dugdale and Sons acquired the mill, leasing it to Higson Brothers .Futher looms were added c1888. Woven cloth included cambrics, mulls etc for the Eastern markets. E and G Hindle took over 1913-14, limited production during 1930's. closed 1939-40 and machinery sold. After wartime the mill was used for the production of textile accessories.
