Albert Mill Lower DarwenrnA four storey mule spinning mill erected 1874-76 by the Albert Spinning Company Limited, a joint-stock venture launched by J.T.Kenyon of Whitehall Mill. W.T. Ashton of Hope Mill, J. Coulthurst, engineer and ironfounder, and others. In 1920 the company was reconstructed as the Albert Spinning and Manufacturing Company Limited, a name which took account of the firm's weaving operation at Southend Mill. Spinning ceased in 1931 and the business went into volountary liquidation. The main body of the factory was later demolished. Since 1946 the site has been used by metal merchants, and for a short time by the Albert Mill Foundary Company. Some remains of ancillary buildings, including part of the chimney base, survive on Cross Street,rnMike Rothwell.
