Blackpool Toast-Rack Tram 001

James and Alice Knowles, who lived in Blackburn, are shown here taking a trip on a Toast-Rack (open top) tram in Blackpool. James and Alice are standing behind and to the right of the woman towards the front in dark clothes and a dark hat. rnThe tram company offered a circular tour or a visit to the Promenade. This photo was taken outside the Oxford Hotel in Marton in 1919, where an enterprising photographer set up his camera, much against the wishes of the Transport Department. He then encouraged the drivers to stop for a few moments while he took a photo. A boy (as can be seen in the picture) held up a number box, and was paid one penny for this task. All passengers were then given a numbered ticket and the following day they could collect a postcard from the Winter Gardens, with themselves in the photograph. rnrn
