E.W.S. 002
EWS (Emergency Water Supplies) Sign on Buncer Road, Blackburn. Image taken by Philip Crompton, March 2022. The sign reads: E.W.S. Stands for Emergency Water Supplies. This sign was put up in 1939 in preparation for war. In the event of water supplies being destroyed due to air raids alternative provisions had to be made for dealing with fires caused by bombing. Renovated by the Rotary Club of Blackburn and unveiled by the Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council Cllr. Karimeh Foster on 30th April 2012. The plaque is also a tribute to those who during the war served in the Auxiliary Fire Service and the various sections of the Civil Defence here in Blackburn.
