Certificate awarded to John Simpson Myerscough on reaching Standard V1 at Tockholes School in 1886. John appears to have been born in Slaidburn in 1873. Aged at least 12, he would have been eligible to enter the half-time system of work if his parents so wished, but could also have gone on to enter full-time employement.
