Alliance 001
Alliance Temperence Hotel, Northgate. First opened in 1878 with John Mitchell serving as proprietor until 1903. The Temperence movement never attained the power of its counterpart in America, which achieved Prohibition in 1920. The British movement sought to achieve its aims through education, religious exhortation and by offering alternatives in the form of the temperence 'Bar'. Nevertheless, the movement provoked hostility among pub landlords and brewers.
