All Hallows Well 005

The sad and neglected location of the ancient All Hallows Well, reached through an underpass running under High Street. Erected in 1955, this plaque commemorates the site of All Hallows Well, which was situated to the rear of the Adelphi public house. All Hallows means All Saints, and in more superstitious times a well would often have medicinal properties ascribed to its waters. The nineteenth century expansion of a major brewery (Dutton’s) close to the site eventually reduced the flow to All Hallows and the site fell into disuse.
