The Crimean War (1853–1856) was fought between Russia on one side and a coalition of Britain, the Ottoman Empire (Turkey), France, and Sardinia. It was sparked by disputes over influence in the weakening Ottoman Empire. Fighting was centred on the Crimean Peninsula, especially the long siege of Sevastopol. The war ended with an Allied victory that checked Russian expansion.
