The Jessica Lofthouse Exhibition
Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery
November 20th 2004 - January 2005
'Thistleton Cottage' painted by by Jessica Lofthouse Jessica Lofthouse was a woman ahead of her time. Artist, poet, travel writer, teacher, she touched the lives of thousands with her enthusiasm for her beloved countryside around Clitheroe. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the area and was in great demand for talks and after-dinner speeches. She famously asked the smokers at one hotel to leave the room before she would proceed with her talk!
Jessica was a Friend of Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery and her last exhibition was during her lifetime, in the Lewis Textile Museum. She is fondly remembered by past and present staff of the Museum and Library, to which she has left her numerous sketches and diaries. Her career spanned fifty years and the exhibition of sketches and watercolours, and designs for engravings for publication in her travel articles, will be on exhibition at Blackburn Museum, together with extracts from her diaries, revealing her response to nature and giving an insight into the passion for the countryside that brought this lady such pleasure during her lifetime.
The Jessica Lofthouse exhibition ran from November the 20th until January 2005 at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery.
