Cotton Town - Blackburn with Darwen

One hundred years ago

The Northern Daily Telegraph was launched in 1886 by T P Ritzema.  It cost one halfpenny and was soon selling 25,000 copies a day.  It covered news throughout the North, and found room for stories of national interest too. Imposing new premises were opened in Railway Road in 1894.

The first issue of the Weekly Telegraph appeared in 1897 and it ran until 1923. The paper ran many columns featuring local information and it's a selection of these that Cotton Town features, bringing to life the cares and concerns of the people of Blackburn and Darwen 100 years ago.
