The Post Office, Abbeystead
The isolated hamlet of Abbeystead is located in the idyllic upper reaches of the River Wyre. The name of the village refers to the fact that the whole are was once owned by Furness Abbey as cattle grazing pasture - in more recent times, the entire village was owned by the Earls of Sefton, including the beautiful 17th century Post Office. Sadly, Abbeystead will always be associated with the Pumping Station explosion which claimed 16 lives in 1984.
