The precise date of the Castle's foundation is uncertain, but is probably around 1086. It is said to have the smallest keep in England. After the Norman Conquest Clitheroe was given to Roger de Poitou. In 1121 it passed to the De Lacy Family who held it for almost 200 years. Since 1920, the Castle and its grounds have belonged to the local council. The meadow at the bottom is now a park and playing field.
